Marangu Route 8-day Trek

 

The Marangu route is the oldest and most popular trail. It is the only route where camping is not necessary, with trekkers sleeping in huts along the way. Trekkers climb up to the summit via Gilman`s point. The average trekkers will take 6 days and 5 nights to complete the trails. The route starts on the southeast side of the mountain.

This route descends on the same route which you ascended; whereas some of the other routes like Machame, Rongai and Lemosho descend on other routes which expose you to more of the mountain scenery.

 

DAY 1 - MREFU MOUNTAIN LODGE - KILIMANJARO.

Clients arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or somewhere else) are transferred to Mrefu Eco-Lodge located at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, start altitude acclimatisation, dinner and overnight.

 

DAY 2 - walking (Acclimatization)

After a Mrefu Mountain Lodge breakfast, clients will go around the Marangu village for cultural activities, watch the blacksmith, tour the traditional ‘banana beer’ local brewery, (you can taste or drink it!), visit the Chagga tribe underground caves (underground tunnels) used for hiding during Maasai and Chagga tribal war, go to Marangu waterfalls (e.g., Kinukamori, etc.) with its water that comes from the snows of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Visit the village gift shop and see the traditional Chagga house.

 

DAY 3 - Walking (Acclimatization)

In the morning you will continue walking around the village and be able to see the beautiful agro-forestry of Kilimanjaro and the Chagga coffee growing plantations. Afternoon you will have a tour walking around Mrefu Mountain Lodge and be able to see and taste the organic farming produce from the farm, observe our strong nature conservation, bush babies and so on. Overnight at Mrefu Mountain Lodge-Kilimanjaro.

 

DAY4 - Marangu gate to Mandara hut

Clients starting to ascent the Mt. Kilimanjaro from 1800m until Mandara hut which takes 2700m. The altitude ranges from 1970 meters (6400 ft) to 2710 meters (8900 ft) and the habitat is rainforest. It takes almost 3-4 hours to reach this station where the clients will take meals and accommodation in the hut.

 

DAY 5 - Mandara hut to Horombo hut

Clients continue to ascend almost 5-7 hours to reach Horombo hut. It is 3720 m and 14km. Horombo hut ranges from altitude of 2710 meters (8900 ft) to 3725 meters (12,200 ft). Habitat is alpine desert.

 

DAY 6 - Horombo huts to Kibo huts

Walking in the cool clear air to cover 4,703 m altitude where the porters remain while you complete the ascent to Uhuru peak, 5895 m during the night. Kibo huts range from altitude of 3,725 meters (12,200 ft) to 4,710 meters (15,400 ft). Habitat is snow.

 

DAY 7 - Descent to Horombo huts

During the morning after breakfast, the clients start to descend to Horombo hut to take meals and overnight.

 

DAY 8- Marangu gate to Mrefu Mountain Lodge-Kilimanjaro.

The clients complete to descend to Marangu gate and taken by vehicles to Mrefu Eco-Lodge for lunch and overnight.
